Monday, April 14’s devotional. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1, CSB). This thunderclap of gospel truth doesn’t whisper— it shouts over the soul weighed down with guilt. Mark Penrith begins with a simple yet staggering question: “How much guilt are you carrying?” Then he leads us straight to the answer: “That voice that whispers, ‘You’re condemned’—what would it take to silence it forever?” The gospel answers with finality: “The gavel has fallen. The verdict is in. No condemnation. Not now. Not ever.”
Romans 8:1 comes after Paul’s desperate cry in Romans 7: “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?” Paul’s inner war is real—his soul is “worn out by war,” Mark says. Yet, in the same breath, Paul lifts his eyes and proclaims: “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” The storm of self-condemnation is silenced by a single truth: “In Christ Jesus, believers are saved from the penalty of sin.”
Mark presses this home: “The Judge has spoken. His gavel has fallen. ‘Not guilty’ stamped on your soul. Righteous is your new identity. In Christ marks your eternal standing.” Not because of anything you’ve done—but because of everything Christ has done.
But what about your ongoing struggle? The guilt that still clings? The sin that still surfaces? Mark reminds us: “Your struggle with sin will continue. Your fight against your flesh will persist. But the divine verdict over your life will never change.” That’s the power of the gospel. “Your failures won’t nullify it. Because your victories didn’t earn it. And Christ’s finished work secured it.”
So what is left to fear? “How much of your guilt remains? How much wrath is left for you to bear? How much separation still exists between you and God?” The answer is glorious: “None. Not a trace. Not a shadow. Not a whisper.” Why? “Because you are in Christ Jesus. United to Him. Covered by Him. Hidden in Him.”
When the voice of sin says, “Guilty”—preach this to your soul: “No condemnation.” When Satan accuses you, when your flesh drags you down, when the night grows dark—cling to Christ’s word over you: “Mine!” For heaven has the last word, and it is this: “Not guilty.”
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the final verdict of “no condemnation” in Christ. Help me to live in the joy of that freedom today. Silence every lying voice, and anchor my heart in Your truth. Amen.
