“Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.” Romans 12:21 (CSB). The gospel shows us the pattern of victory. Jesus conquered the greatest evil by giving Himself. Mark Penrith said, “Love is not a weakness. Love is your weapon.” The world conquers through force. Christ conquers through sacrifice. “Love, demonstrated through you, is God’s chosen weapon to win a world to Himself.” When we choose to give good to those who bring evil, we follow the way of Christ. Mark said, “The Christian does not play the enemy’s game.” The world expects retaliation. God calls us to shock the world with grace. This is the strategy of the cross. It is the strength that turns hatred into humility, and hostility into repentance.
Paul writes, “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink.” Romans 12:20 (CSB). Mark said, “You do good when evil demands a response.” God does not tell us to withdraw from our enemy. He tells us to move toward them. He tells us to act. He calls us to bless the one who wounded us. This is where love becomes visible. “By loving your enemy, you may win him to Christ.” Our obedience can melt a hardened heart. Our kindness may open a closed door. Mark said, “Love is the weapon He chooses.” We do not need to wait until our feelings catch up. We choose obedience today. We choose the action of good even when our emotions resist.
Paul reminds us why we take this path. “For in so doing you will be heaping fiery coals on his head.” Romans 12:20 (CSB). This is not vengeance. This is the burning conviction of grace. Mark said, “Shocking grace shattered Jean’s life of hatred.” Grace breaks evil from the inside out. It exposes darkness. It defeats pride. It announces that God is the true judge. The cross teaches us that evil cannot win. Christ has already overcome it. Mark said, “He conquered the ultimate evil of sin and death with the ultimate good of His sacrificial love.” This is why we can love our enemies. This is why we can bless those who hurt us. We follow Jesus into victory.
Choose one enemy or wound today and do one act of good. Choose a neighbour or friend and do something kind as a family. What good will you use to conquer evil in your life this week?
Prayer: Lord, help me to overcome evil with good. Help me to act in love and follow the pattern of Jesus. Amen.
