Naomi and Ruth faced an uncertain future. They had no income, no security, and no clear plan. Yet Ruth refused to sit still. She took the next faithful step. As Ruth said to Naomi, “Will you let me go into the fields and gather fallen grain behind someone with whom I find favor?” (Ruth 2:2, CSB). In his sermon, Mark Penrith notes, “She does not wait passively for rescue. She moves. She acts. She places herself in the path of God’s provision.” Ruth did not know how God would provide. She simply knew she needed to obey.
Faith often looks less dramatic than we imagine. We want a detailed roadmap. We want certainty. Ruth received neither. Instead, she walked into the fields trusting the Lord. Mark observes, “She trusts God’s provision, even when the path is uncertain.” That is often how God leads His people. He rarely reveals the whole journey. He calls us to take the next step and trust Him with the destination.
The narrator then tells us, “She happened to be in the portion of the field belonging to Boaz” (Ruth 2:3, CSB). From a human perspective, it appears accidental. From God’s perspective, it was providence. Mark explains, “This is not luck. Not coincidence. This is the providence of God.” Ruth was simply being faithful. Meanwhile, God was directing every step. The Lord was already leading her toward the redeemer who would provide protection, provision, and hope.
Many of us hesitate because we cannot see the outcome. We delay difficult conversations. We postpone spiritual disciplines. We avoid opportunities to serve. Yet obedience is not waiting until every question is answered. Mark reminds us, “Faith takes the next obedient step while trusting God with the outcome.” The Lord often unfolds His purposes as we walk forward in faith. The next faithful step may seem small, but God delights to use ordinary obedience for extraordinary purposes.
Consider what step God may be calling you to take today. Perhaps it is leading family worship, reconciling with someone, serving in your local church, or reviving a neglected prayer life. Take that step. Trust the Lord with the results. And if you have children, ask them where they need God’s help this week. Pray together and teach them that obedience often comes before understanding.

Prayer: Father, help us to trust You when the path ahead is unclear. Give us courage to obey today and confidence that You are directing our steps for Your glory. Amen.
