Ruth entered Boaz’s field as a vulnerable foreigner. She expected to gather a few scraps of grain. Instead, she encountered extraordinary kindness. Boaz said to her, “Listen, my daughter. Don’t go and gather grain in another field, and don’t leave this one, but stay here close to my female servants” (Ruth 2:8, CSB). In his sermon, Mark Penrith says, “Boaz does not just tolerate Ruth. He shelters her.” What began as a search for food quickly became an experience of protection, provision, and grace.
Boaz went far beyond what the law required. He told Ruth, “Haven’t I ordered the young men not to touch you? When you are thirsty, go and drink from the jars the young men have filled” (Ruth 2:9, CSB). Mark explains, “He doesn’t just give her a job. He gives her a shield against exploitation.” Ruth came looking for provision. Boaz provided safety, dignity, and care. The redeemer’s kindness reached every area of her need.
The generosity continued throughout the day. At mealtime, Boaz welcomed Ruth to sit among his workers. Scripture says, “She ate and was satisfied and had some left over” (Ruth 2:14, CSB). Mark notes, “She is not kept at arm’s length. She is brought into fellowship.” Ruth was not treated as an outsider. She was welcomed to the table. She received more than enough. She experienced acceptance as well as provision.
Then Boaz instructed his workers, “Let her even gather grain among the bundles, and don’t humiliate her” (Ruth 2:15, CSB). Mark describes this as “not grudging charity” but “abundant generosity.” By the end of the day Ruth carried home about twenty litres of barley. It was tangible evidence that the redeemer’s kindness overflowed. As Mark says, “The redeemer’s kindness provides protection and abundance.” Boaz did not simply meet Ruth’s needs. He exceeded them.
All of this points us to Christ. Jesus does not merely rescue sinners from judgment. He welcomes us into fellowship with Himself. He forgives our sins. He adopts us into God’s family. He supplies grace for every need. As Mark reminds us, “Jesus Christ did not merely drop extra handfuls of grain for us.” Through His death and resurrection He secured an eternal inheritance for His people. Today, take a few moments to thank Him for His abundant provision. Count His blessings. Remember His grace. Rest in His care.
