We often focus on what people can see. We manage our behaviour. We protect our reputation. We try to appear disciplined, respectable, and religious. But Titus 1 takes us deeper. Paul says, “To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure.” Mark explains, “Paul turns from the outside to the inside. From what they do to who they are.” The problem is not merely what comes out of us. The problem begins within us.
Paul says that the defiled have minds and consciences that are defiled. That means sin reaches deeper than our actions. It affects how we think, what we desire, and how we evaluate right and wrong. Mark says, “This is not a surface problem. This is a heart problem.” Romans 3 exposes the same reality: “There is no one righteous, not even one. There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.” We cannot solve a heart problem with outward improvement. Religious activity cannot make a sinful heart clean.
That makes Titus 1:16 especially sobering. Paul says, “They claim to know God, but they deny him by their works.” Their words made one claim. Their lives made another. Mark puts it sharply: “Their conduct contradicts their confession. Their lives undermine their lips.” We can fall into the same trap. We may attend church, read our Bibles, serve faithfully, and still protect sin in the hidden places of our hearts. Outward Christianity cannot substitute for inward transformation. God is not merely interested in how we look to others. He sees the heart.
So spend five quiet minutes today before the Lord. Ask Him to expose one area where you are managing appearances instead of confronting sin. Do not simply ask, “How can I behave better?” Ask, “What is happening in my heart?” Then confess what He reveals. If you are raising children, remember this when you correct them. Do not focus only on the behaviour. Help them see that disobedience comes from the heart and that they need Christ, not merely better behaviour. Mark reminds us, “The heart determines everything.” That truth should humble us. It should also drive us toward the Saviour.
