Strength for Shaken Souls

27 April 2026

Life can feel secure, until suddenly it does not. A phone call changes everything. A doctor’s report unsettles the heart. Financial strain creeps in. Conflict enters the home. In those moments we discover how fragile earthly supports really are. Mark Penrith began with this sober reminder, “When the ground beneath you gives way, your good habits will not brace you.” That is true. Yet Romans does not leave us trembling. Paul lifts our eyes heavenward. “Now to him who is able to strengthen you” (Romans 16:25). What comfort lives in those words. God is able. God strengthens unstable people.

Mark said, “The final word of Romans is that your stability rests not in your frail grip on Him, but in His sovereign grip on you.” Behold the sweetness of that truth. Our security does not rise and fall with our emotions. It does not depend on whether this has been a spiritually strong week. It rests in the God who holds His people fast. Paul does not say God merely encourages. He strengthens. He settles souls. He makes His church stand firm.

And how does He do this? “God strengthens the unstable through the gospel of His Son.” Mark repeated that line because Paul repeats the point. “According to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ” (Romans 16:25). Christ crucified. Christ risen. Christ proclaimed. This is how weary saints are steadied. Not by grit. Not by self-talk. Mark put it plainly, “The gospel strengthens.” When fear rises in the night, preach Christ to your own heart. When work pressures mount, return to the cross. When parenting feels heavy, remember the empty tomb.

Perhaps you feel shaken today. Name the pressure. Bring it before the Lord before reaching for distraction or control. Turn from what wobbles. Lean hard on what holds. Mark said, “The One who is able can.” Verily, He can.

If you have children at your table tonight, ask what makes them afraid. Listen well. Then tell them God helps weak people stand. Let your home hear the gospel in simple words.

And consider this question together. Where are you tempted to look for stability apart from God? Reputation? Money? Routine? Approval? These cannot hold you. But Christ can.

“The God who strengthens the unstable gets all the glory.”

Lord, strengthen our shaken hearts through the gospel of Your Son, and teach us to rest in Your sovereign grip. Amen.
