The Lord repeats His command. “The Lord of Armies says this: Think carefully about your ways.” This is not casual reflection. It is focused. Intentional. Searching. God calls His people to stop and look closely at their lives. As Mark Penrith explains, “set your heart upon your paths. Examine the evidence.” This is a summons to clarity. A refusal to drift. God will not leave His people in comfortable blindness.
Then He commands action. “Go up into the hills, bring down timber, and build the house, and I will be pleased with it and be glorified.” The problem is not confusion. The path is clear. Yet their lives tell a different story. Mark says, “the ruin of God’s house does not trouble your heart. Only your own comfort stirs you to action.” Their priorities have shifted. Quietly. Subtly. They have built their world around themselves.
God exposes the result. “You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined it. Why?” The answer is direct. “Because my house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.” Their drought is not random. It is purposeful. Mark states it plainly, “He wanted their attention. So He took their harvest. He wanted their heart. So He took their comfort.” God removes what they trust to reveal what they love.
This kind of reflection requires space. Time. Honesty. So take five minutes today. No phone. No noise. Ask direct questions. What is getting my best energy. My best time. My best focus. Mark presses us, “look at the ground. Look at your wages. Look at your tables. The evidence is not hidden.” Your life already tells the story. You simply need to read it.
Bring this into your home. Lead your family gently. Ask, what did we give our best to this week. Not what we said mattered. What actually received our attention. Shape the conversation. Train your children to see clearly.
God still speaks. He still calls. He still exposes. “Think carefully about your ways.” Do not rush past that command. Let it search you.
Question:
If your life reveals your priorities, what is it currently saying?
Prayer:
Lord, give me honesty to see my ways clearly. Turn my heart toward what pleases You. Amen.
