Live Before the Face of God

30 September 2026

It is easy to obey when someone is watching. The real test comes when nobody is looking. Paul challenged the Philippians to obey “not only as in my presence, but much more in my absence.” Mike pressed the point home: “Your obedience should not stem from wanting to please me.” Christian obedience does not depend on the presence of a pastor, a parent, an accountability partner, or another Christian. We live before God. He sees what others cannot see. He knows every action, every thought, and every motive. The question is not simply, “What will people think?” The deeper question is, “What does God see?”

Paul says, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” That fear does not mean that Christians live terrified of losing their salvation. It means that we take God seriously. We remember that we live before a holy King. Isaiah 66:2 says, “This is the one I will look on: the one who is humble, contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.” The fear of God must become greater than our desire for human approval. At work, we should act with integrity even when the boss is absent. At home, we should pursue holiness even when nobody applauds us. In private, we should fight sin because God sees us. We do not live for the audience around us. We live before the face of God.

Mike gave us a memorable phrase: “Daily you see the face of man. But one day you will stand before the face of God and give an account.” That reality should reshape the way we live. We can fool people for a while. We can appear godly at church while hiding sin at home. We can maintain a respectable reputation while neglecting our hearts. But God sees everything. He also gives us the answer. We are not transformed merely by trying harder to appear righteous. We are transformed as we continually behold Christ. Paul writes, “We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory.” What we consistently behold shapes us.

So where do you need to live before the face of God today? Think about your workplace, your home, your church, and your private life. Ask yourself, “Would I do this if no person knew, but I knew God was watching?” Then open Scripture and deliberately behold Christ. Read about His humility. Consider His obedience. Look again at His holiness, His sacrifice, and His glory. Your children are watching too. They need to see that your private life matches your public faith. They need to learn that integrity means obeying God even when nobody else sees. Do not live merely for the praise of people. Live coram Deo. Live before the face of God.

Father, teach me to live before Your face. Forgive me for the times I have cared more about the approval of people than obedience to You. Give me a humble and contrite heart that trembles at Your Word. Help me pursue holiness when nobody is watching. Guard my heart from hypocrisy and people-pleasing. Fix my eyes on Christ through Your Word, and by Your Spirit transform me into His likeness. May my private life match my public faith, and may my children see in me a man who lives before You. Help me remember that You see me everywhere I go. May that truth lead me not to hide from You, but to walk faithfully before You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
