What do we teach about giving?

To give as an act of worship is a familiar theme throughout Scripture (Numbers 18:26). In the Old Testament, all Israelites tithed their earnings, around 23.3%, as a method of taxation. which provided for the needs of the priests and the sacrificial system (2 Chronicles 31:5).

Christians are not told to tithe. The New Testament does not command, or even recommend, that Christians submit to a legalistic tithe system. The New Testament nowhere designates a percentage of income a person should set aside but only says gifts should be in keeping with income (1 Corinthians 16:1-2).

We give to meet the needs of the saints (Acts 2:44-45) and the needs of Christian workers (1 Timothy 5:17-18). We also give to meet the needs of the poor (Matthew 25:31-40).

Our giving is a tremendous privilege, not a heavy burden. It should be anonymous (Matthew 6:1-4), cheerful (2 Corinthians 9:7) and sacrificial in nature (2 Corinthians 8:1-5).

Giving is to be a part of regular worship but special offerings can be taken up (Acts 11:29-30).

Finally, the prime motive to give is the example laid down by our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 8-9). Our giving ought to be a self-motivated, God-glorifying act of worship (2 Corinthians 9:7).
