Join the Cosmic Celebration

This week’s series of blog posts have been created from Mark’s notes rather than a transcript of the sermon. This hopefully will give you additional insight into the passage. You can download Mark’s sermon notes below.

Saturday, December 28’s devotional. Psalm 98:7-9 invites us into a cosmic symphony of praise: “Let the sea and all that fills it, the world and those who live in it, resound. Let the rivers clap their hands; let the mountains shout together for joy before the Lord, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world righteously and the peoples fairly.” In these verses, all creation joins in celebrating the Lord’s rule, demonstrating that worship is not confined to human voices but resonates across the universe.

Mark Penrith emphasizes this grandeur: “Imagine the rivers clapping their hands and the mountains joining the chorus. Creation itself responds to the Creator’s majesty.” This vivid imagery reveals that our worship is part of a greater, eternal celebration where all things glorify God. The psalmist’s vision reminds us that everything created reflects the greatness of its Maker.

This cosmic celebration centers on the righteous rule of God. The Lord comes to judge the earth, and His judgment is perfectly fair and righteous. This righteous reign of God is a cause for joy, as it brings peace, justice, and restoration to the world. Reflecting on this, Isaiah 55:12 echoes the psalmist’s vision: “The mountains and the hills will break into singing before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.”

Our worship today is a foretaste of this eternal chorus. The Benoni Baptist Church covenant reminds us, “We will strive to live according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh, believing that God is holy and that those who seek to be called by His name must be holy too.” When we worship, we align ourselves with this holiness, offering praise that joins creation in exalting the King.

Take time today to experience this cosmic celebration firsthand. Step outside, take a walk in nature, and praise God for His creation. Let the beauty of rivers, mountains, and seas inspire you to worship the Creator who is worthy of all glory.

Prayer: Lord, I join creation in praising You for Your majesty and righteousness. Help me to live a life that reflects Your glory and contributes to the eternal chorus of worship. Amen.
