The Wages of Sin vs. The Gift of God

This week’s series of blog posts have been created from Mark’s notes rather than a transcript of the sermon. This hopefully will give you additional insight into the passage. You can download Mark’s sermon notes below.

Friday, February 28’s devotional. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23, CSB)

Sin is a cruel master. It pays out exactly what it owes—death. Mark Penrith preached, “Sin promises pleasure but always delivers destruction. It lures us in, convinces us we are in control, and then binds us in chains.” Paul describes this tragic reality by using the word “wages.” Wages are earned. Sin pays what is due, and the final paycheck is eternal separation from God.

Thankfully, Paul does not end the verse with despair. He presents an incredible contrast: “But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” You can’t earn a gift. A gift is freely given. Eternal life is not something we achieve—it is something we receive. While sin gives us what we deserve, God gives us what we could never deserve: forgiveness, salvation, and eternity with Him.

This contrast between wages and a gift reveals the heart of the gospel. Why do we sometimes act as though we must earn God’s favor? Many live with the mindset that if they work hard enough, God will accept them. But Paul makes it clear—sin leads to death, and only God can grant eternal life. We do not work for salvation; we receive it through faith in Christ.

Paul specifies that this gift comes “in Christ Jesus our Lord.” There is no salvation apart from Him. Mark emphasized, “Jesus alone paid the price for our sin. He took the wages we deserved so that we could receive the gift He offers.” This is the good news of the gospel: Christ bore our punishment, and in exchange, He gives us life.

What do your actions reveal? Are you living as though you must earn God’s favor? Or are you resting in the finished work of Christ? Stop striving to earn what God has already freely given. Receive His gift, rejoice in it, and proclaim it to others.

Reflection Questions:

Why do we sometimes act as though we must earn God’s favor?

How does the contrast between wages and gifts shape your understanding of salvation?

Challenge: Share the gospel with someone this week, emphasizing the free gift of salvation.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for offering me the free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Help me to stop striving for what You have already given and instead rest in Your grace. May I share this good news with others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
