Christ, the Fulfilment of the Promise

16 August 2025

Isaac’s laughter was born from a barren womb. Jacob’s destiny was sealed before he drew breath. Both point us beyond themselves to the greater reality. As Mark said, “Isaac was a miracle birth. Jacob was a sovereign choice. But Christ? Christ is the substance.” The promise made to Abraham, the promise narrowed through Isaac and Jacob, finds its completion in Jesus.

Paul writes, “Now it is not as though the word of God has failed, because not all who are descended from Israel are Israel” (Romans 9:6). God’s Word stands because His purpose stands. Isaac was not the son of human striving, but of divine promise. “Isaac was not conceived by passion. He was called by promise. Not birthed by effort. But delivered by decree.” So too, Christ came not by human plan but by sovereign design. In Him the children of promise are secured.

Jacob was chosen while still in the womb, “so that God’s purpose according to election might stand—not from works but from the one who calls” (Romans 9:11–12). His election exposes the futility of boasting. Mark reminded us, “Works? Crumbled. Pedigree? Worthless. Human will? Irrelevant. Only God’s call stands.” This was not only true for Jacob. It is true for you. Your salvation rests not on your merit but on Christ’s finished work.

At Calvary election was enacted. “The Son is delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.” Isaac’s supernatural birth pointed to it. Jacob’s unconditional election foreshadowed it. But Christ is its fulfilment. “The cross declares, salvation belongs to the Lord. The empty tomb thunders, God’s elective love prevails.” His promise is kept in blood and in glory.

What does this mean for you? It means Christ is enough. Strip away your heritage, your achievements, your religious credentials. What remains? Christ alone. And He is sufficient. He is the chosen Seed, the crucified Lamb, the risen King. “The same love that embraced Jacob now embraces you. Through the blood of Christ.”

So flee self-reliance. Rest in Christ’s finished work. With your children, read Ephesians 1:3–6 aloud and give thanks. Praise God who “predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” In Him the promise is fulfilled.

Prayer:
Lord, strip us of pride and empty credentials. Fix our eyes on Christ, the fulfilment of every promise. Teach us to rest in His finished work alone. Amen.
