Equipping the Saints

23 September 2025

“…to equip the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ” (CSB).

Christ gives leaders not as an end in themselves but for a clear purpose. “Leaders equip the saints for the work of the ministry, to build up the body of Christ.” Ministry is not reserved for a few professionals. It is the shared calling of every believer. Mark reminded us, “Your pastor is not the only minister at Benoni Baptist Church. We are a priesthood of all believers. We have a shared mission.”

Paul’s picture is practical. Equipping leads to service, and service leads to growth. Without this, a church remains immature, tossed about like a boat in a storm. “An immature believer is like a boat adrift at sea. In a storm. Anchorless. Rudderless. Unstable. Directionless.” That is not what Christ intends for His people. He calls every believer into ministry so that the church may stand firm, united, and mature.

This maturity is marked not only by stability but also by truth and love. “Here is the goal. Not just truth. Truth spoken in love. Not just growth. Growth into Him. Christ is the target. Christ is the measure. Christ is the goal.” Equipping is therefore not about filling heads with knowledge. It is about shaping lives into Christ’s likeness. That happens when leaders prepare saints, and saints serve faithfully.

For you, this means taking a step out of the stands and onto the field. Mark urged us, “This week, I want you to take a step. One step out of the stands and onto the field. The game is in play. Not in the stands.” Sign up for a small group. Volunteer in a ministry. Encourage a fellow believer. Every act of service builds up the body of Christ.

Help your children see this truth at home. Talk with them about how every part of the family helps the home work. Then explain how every believer has a part in Christ’s body. Just as a home would falter if no one contributed, so the church suffers when believers do not serve.

Discussion question: What is one way you can serve the body of Christ this week?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling every believer into ministry. Equip me to serve Your people. Give me courage to take a step out of the stands and onto the field, for Your glory. Amen.
