Christ the Giver

22 September 2025

Christ is the ascended Victor. He has won the battle through His death and resurrection, and now He distributes the spoils of His victory to His church. As Mark said, “His gifts are not random blessings. They are the spoils of His war. They are the direct result of His crucifixion and resurrection.” Jesus has not left His people to drift. He gives leaders so that His church may thrive.

The apostle Paul roots this truth in Psalm 68:18, picturing Jesus as the conquering warrior. “Like a conqueror He now distributes the spoils of His victory to His people.” The gifts are apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastor-teachers. Some were foundational and unique to the early church, like apostles and prophets, who laid the foundation of God’s household (Ephesians 2:20). As Mark explained, “You lay a foundation once. And then you raise a building.” Others, like evangelists and pastor-teachers, remain Christ’s gift today.

These leaders are given for a purpose. Evangelists proclaim the good news, extending the church’s borders. Pastor-teachers “care for and instruct the flock of God. They protect the sheep from error. They feed the sheep with truth.” In giving such leaders, Christ ensures His people are nourished, protected, and guided. These gifts are not manmade positions. They are grace from the ascended Lord, intended for your growth in faith.

So how should you respond? First, thank Christ for His generosity. As Mark reminded us, “Thus the ascended Victor gifts His church. Not leaving us orphans. Providing the leadership necessary to equip us for ministry.” Second, pray for your leaders. They are Christ’s gift, but they remain human. They need your intercession as they shepherd, teach, and guard the flock.

At home, you can help your family grasp this truth. Around the dinner table, invite your children to share one gift they have received that helped them grow. Then remind them that Jesus gives His church gifts too—leaders who help us grow in Him.

Discussion question: How does seeing pastors and teachers as Christ’s gift change the way you listen to and support them?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for gifting Your church with leaders. Help me to honour them as Your provision. Strengthen them to feed, guard, and guide us. Keep me grateful and prayerful, for Your glory. Amen.
