“From him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body” (CSB).
Growth in the church does not flow from personalities or programs. It flows from Christ. As Mark said, “The final word anchors everything. From him. Not from programs. Not from personalities. From him. From Jesus Christ.” Christ is the Head. He is the source of life, the giver of strength, and the unifying authority of His body. A body only lives as long as it remains connected to its head. “Chop off a man’s head and his body dies. It may twitch for a moment. But it is a corpse. Benoni Baptist Church is only alive so long as we are attached to our Head, Jesus Christ.”
This truth was radical in Paul’s day. The Romans loved the body metaphor, but they used it to enforce hierarchy. The emperor was the head, and slaves were the feet. Unity came from knowing your station. Paul subverts this picture. In Christ’s body, unity comes not from status but from function. “And the head is not Caesar. The head is Jesus Christ, who is King of kings, and Lord of lords.” Christ gives life to Jew and Gentile, rich and poor, young and old. He unites diverse members into one body under His sovereign rule.
Christ is not only the unifier but also the sustainer. “He is our Sovereign Lord. He holds ultimate authority over His church. He is our authoritative voice. Speaks through His Word. He is our life giver. We draw our very breath from Him. He is our one true Head.” This is not optional. Any attempt to establish another head is rebellion. The church lives only as she remains connected to Him. Cut off from Christ, she is nothing more than a twitching corpse.
So how should you respond today? Begin by confessing that Jesus is your Head. Before you start your workday, pray, “Lord Jesus, You are my Head. Direct my thoughts, words, and actions today.” Live consciously under His authority. Draw your strength from Him. Remember that your growth, your family’s stability, and your church’s vitality depend on staying connected to Him.
Parents, this truth can be made simple for children. Remind them that just as their bodies cannot live without their head, we cannot live without Christ. Without Him, there is no life, no direction, no unity. With Him, there is strength, growth, and love.
Discussion question: What does it mean for your daily decisions that Jesus—not you—is the Head?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, keep me connected to You. Rule my thoughts and guide my steps. Be my life, my strength, and my Head. Amen.
