A Mission Bigger Than Us

19 March 2026

Paul reveals the driving ambition of his ministry. He writes, “My aim is to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named, so that I will not build on someone else’s foundation” (Romans 15:20). In his sermon, Mark Penrith explains the heart behind this ambition. Mark Penrith says, “He is a pioneer. He goes where Christ is not named.” Paul does not seek comfort or recognition. He pursues places where the gospel has not yet reached. His life is shaped by a mission far bigger than himself.

This ambition is not self-generated. It flows from Scripture. Paul grounds his mission in God’s promises. He continues, “but, as it is written: Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand” (Romans 15:21). Mark explains this connection clearly. “Paul is not inventing a mission. He is fulfilling Scripture.” The apostle sees his work as part of God’s unfolding plan to bring the nations to salvation. The gospel was always meant to reach beyond one people to all peoples.

Paul’s vision stretches across regions and cultures. He has already preached “from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum.” Yet he does not settle. Mark captures this restless obedience. “His ambition is not to settle.” The gospel compels him forward. The Servant has suffered. The nations must hear. Those who have not seen must see. Those who have not heard must understand.

This same mission continues today. God still gathers people from every nation. Mark reminds us that “prophecy drives him. Spain is next because the Word requires it.” The mission belongs to God. He calls His people to participate in it. Not all will go to distant lands. But all can pray. All can support. All can care about the spread of the gospel.

Take a few minutes today to pray for a missionary or ministry your church supports. Ask God to strengthen them. Ask Him to open hearts. Ask Him to advance the gospel where Christ is not yet known. Your prayers matter more than you realise.

In your home, show your children a map. Choose one country together. Pray that people in that place would hear the gospel and believe. Help them see that God’s plan includes the whole world.

Why do you think God calls ordinary believers to be involved in a global mission?

Lord, thank you that your gospel is for all nations. Stir our hearts to care about your mission. Strengthen those who go, and teach us to pray faithfully for the spread of your Word. Amen.
