God does not strengthen His people merely so they feel secure. He strengthens them so they obey. Paul says the gospel has been made known “to advance the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles” (Romans 16:26). That phrase carries weight. Faith does not sit still. Faith moves. Faith bows. Mark Penrith said, “Christian faith always results in works. Faith always bows the knee.” True faith bears fruit. The gospel does not merely comfort weak believers. It forms faithful ones.
This matters because we can mistake assurance for maturity. We can think spiritual strength means simply feeling settled. But Paul presses further. Strength has a purpose. Obedience. Mark said, “God strengthens His church so that obedient faith will spread across the earth.” What a vision. God steadies us, not so we can remain passive, but so we may walk with Him. Not perfectly. But truly. Not earning grace, but flowing from grace.
And this obedience is born from the gospel itself. It is not cold duty. It is faith responding to mercy. Mark said, “Salvation always looks like something.” Yes. It shows up in forgiven offences. Honest witness. Quiet perseverance. Hidden holiness. Where Christ rules, obedience follows. “Like a tree is known by its fruit, faith is known by its obedience,” Mark reminded us. That is searching. But it is life giving too.
So choose one concrete act of obedience today. Keep it simple. Forgive someone you have avoided. Speak of Christ in one conversation at work. Gather your family tonight and pray. Do not wait for dramatic opportunities. Obey in the ordinary. Mark said, “Pray for concrete, specific obedience.” That is wise counsel. Start there.
And fathers, bring this into your home. Ask your children, What is one way we can obey Jesus together today? Read Scripture together. Serve someone. Pray for a neighbour. Let obedience be seen as joyful response, not mere rule keeping.
And ask your own heart this question. What act of obedience has the Lord been pressing on your conscience? Is there something delayed? Something resisted? Something half surrendered? Behold, delayed obedience is still disobedience.
Mark said, “The God who strengthens the unstable gets all the glory.” Even in your obedience, His grace gets the praise. He strengthens. He leads. He bears fruit.
Lord, strengthen us for obedient faith, make us quick to follow Christ, and let our lives bear fruit for Your glory. Amen.
