The people had obeyed God. They had returned to the work. The foundation stones had been laid. Yet if they looked around, very little seemed different. God asked them, “Is there still seed left in the granary? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet produced” (Haggai 2:19, CSB). Their circumstances still looked bleak. As Mark Penrith described it, “The storehouses are empty. The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet produced.”
Imagine standing there after obeying God and seeing no immediate change. The fields still looked barren. The cupboards still looked empty. The future still seemed uncertain. Mark captured their reality when he said, “Their circumstances have not changed. The fields are still barren. The vats are still dry. The economy is still shattered.” Obedience had begun, but visible results had not arrived.
Many believers know that feeling. You pursue holiness. You fight sin. You lead your family. You keep praying. Yet life still feels dry. The marriage still needs work. The financial pressure remains. The difficult season continues. We often expect immediate results after obedience. We want visible proof that God is at work. But Mark reminds us, “Nothing in the barn. Nothing on the tree. Nothing in the press.” Sometimes faith means trusting God when the evidence has not appeared yet.
Then the Lord spoke hope into their emptiness. “But from this day on I will bless you” (Haggai 2:19, CSB). Notice what changed first. Not their circumstances. Not the harvest. Not the economy. God spoke His promise before they could see any results. Mark said, “The ground is still bare. The blessing is already spoken.” God acts by His gracious initiative. His promises do not depend on what we can currently see.
Write down one area where you feel discouraged today. Pray over it. Remind yourself that God often works long before you can see the fruit. Then use tonight’s dinner table conversation to ask your family about times they had to wait for God to answer prayer. Children struggle to wait. Adults do too.
