Truth and love belong together. John opens his letter to the church with these words, “Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love” (2 John 3, CSB). That is not sentimental language. It is doctrinal language. Mark reminded us on Sunday that “truth and love are not opposites. They are twin sisters walking down the road hand in hand.” A church cannot claim to love while abandoning truth. And Christians cannot claim to defend truth while acting without love.
This matters deeply for ordinary Christian life. Many men drift toward one extreme or the other. Some love precision but lack gentleness. Others want kindness without conviction. But John refuses to separate the two. He writes “to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth” (2 John 1, CSB). Notice that phrase, “in the truth.” Mark explained that this is “not sentimental affection. Not mushy loyalty. Love rooted in shared conviction.” Biblical love stands firmly upon biblical truth. And biblical truth produces genuine love for God’s people.
The gospel shapes both. John says truth “remains in us and will be with us forever” (2 John 2, CSB). Christians are united by the truth of Christ crucified and risen. Because of that, grace, mercy, and peace flow into our lives. Mark said, “Truth and love are inseparable.” Behold the wisdom of God here. Truth without love becomes cold correctness. Love without truth becomes vague sentimentality. But the gospel produces conviction with compassion. Strength with tenderness. Fidelity with warmth.
Take ten minutes today and examine your own heart. Where do you drift? Do you soften truth to avoid conflict at work? Do you speak sharply at home in the name of being right? Ask the Lord to make you both faithful and gentle. Around the dinner table tonight, ask your children why truthful words should also be loving words. Then model it yourself. Your family needs to hear both conviction and kindness from your lips.
Mark said, “Grace. Mercy. Peace. All come to us in truth and love.” Verily, they still do.
Prayer: Father, help us to love truth without becoming harsh, and to love people without compromising Your Word. Make us faithful and gentle through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
