Walk in the Old Paths

9 June 2026

John rejoiced because some believers were “walking in truth” (2 John 4, CSB). Christianity is not merely right doctrine stored in your mind. It is truth lived out in ordinary life. Mark Penrith reminded us that “walking is not about a single step. Walking is a habitual way of life.” That changes how we think about discipleship. Your walk appears in your speech at work. Your patience in traffic. Your honesty in meetings. Your kindness at home. Truth must move from the pulpit into daily life.

John says, “I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth” (2 John 4, CSB). Yet there is sadness hidden in those words. Mark noted the shadow in the text, “Some of your children. Not all.” Some walked faithfully. Others drifted. That is still true today. Some men hear God’s Word on Sunday but ignore it by Monday afternoon. The pastor rejoices over growth, yet grieves over compromise. Verily, obedience matters. Not perfection. But direction. Christians walk forward, even slowly, because Christ has changed them.

John then points the church back to an old command. “We should love one another” (2 John 5, CSB). The world constantly demands novelty. New ideologies. New spiritual trends. New definitions of love. But Mark said, “False teachers love to peddle fresh ideas. But John will not innovate. He returns to the beginning.” Christ’s command has not changed. Love God. Love one another. Walk according to His Word. Real love is not vague sentiment. It is obedience shaped by truth.

“This is love: that we should walk according to his commands” (2 John 6, CSB). Mark explained it simply, “To love God is to obey God.” Choose one deliberate act of obedience today. Apologise if you have spoken harshly. Refuse dishonest speech at work. Pray with your wife before bed. Small acts matter because faithfulness is built step by step. Children especially notice those ordinary moments. They learn love by watching their parents obey Christ in daily life. Patience. Integrity. Gentleness. Consistency.

Mark said, “Love marks the walked perimeter of the Christian life.” May that perimeter shape your home today.

Prayer: Father, teach us to walk in truth with steady obedience. Help our lives display love for Christ in ordinary moments, for Your glory and the good of our families. Amen.
