Redemption is not something God accomplishes behind closed doors. As Mark Penrith reminded us, “Boaz intends his personal pledge to become a public, covenantal legality. Not a private sentiment.” That is exactly what we see in Ruth 4. Boaz went to the city gate, the place where legal matters were settled before witnesses. Then he gathered ten elders and began the process of redeeming Ruth and Naomi. Scripture says, “Boaz went to the gate of the town and sat down there” and “Boaz took ten men of the town’s elders and said, ‘Sit here.’ And they sat down” (Ruth 4:1–2, CSB). Boaz was not looking for a quiet arrangement. He wanted everyone to know that redemption was certain.
That public act points us to a far greater Redeemer. Mark said, “Boaz’s costly, public, covenant keeping redemption beautifully prefigures Jesus Christ, our ultimate Redeemer.” Jesus did not simply promise that He would save sinners. He publicly bore our sin on the cross. He died in our place. He rose again in victory. His work was completed once for all. Because of His finished work, your salvation does not depend on fluctuating emotions or changing circumstances. It rests entirely upon what Christ has accomplished.
Many believers struggle with assurance because they look inward instead of upward. Feelings rise and fall. Circumstances change. Christ does not. Mark reminds us, “This anchors us in a legally binding, resurrection proven redemption that does not depend on our pedigree, our moral record, or our fleshly strength. It depends entirely on Jesus Christ.” When doubts come, preach this truth to yourself. Your confidence is not found in the strength of your faith, but in the strength of your Saviour.
Take time today to remind your family of God’s faithfulness. Speak about the gospel around the dinner table. Let your children hear you rejoice in what Christ has already accomplished. As Mark observed, “The court is in session. The jury is seated.” The verdict has already been secured by the greater Boaz. Christ has redeemed His people completely. Rest in Him today.
Prayer
Father, thank You that my salvation rests on the finished work of Jesus Christ and not on my changing feelings. Help me to trust Him fully and to speak often of Your faithfulness in my home. Amen.
