“‘I am Ruth, your servant,’ she replied. ‘Take me under your wing, for you are a family redeemer.’”
Ruth’s request to Boaz is one of the most beautiful pictures of faith in the Old Testament. She came with nothing but her need. She sought refuge under the protection of her redeemer. In his sermon on this passage, Mark Penrith explains, “Ruth asks Boaz to spread your wings over your servant, for you are a redeemer.” He goes on to say, “Boaz’s wing is the human instrument of God’s wing. He is the redeemer who shelters. Who covers. Who provides refuge.” Ruth found safety because she entrusted herself to the one who was able to redeem her.
Boaz, however, was only a shadow of Someone greater. Mark reminds us, “Boaz is not the ultimate redeemer. He is a pointer. A pattern. A preview of something greater.” That greater Redeemer is Jesus Christ. He invites weary sinners to come to Him, saying, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” and, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28, 30). At the cross, Jesus accomplished what Boaz could only foreshadow. Mark declares, “Jesus did not merely promise to redeem. He paid the price. He bore our sin, our restlessness, our curse, so that we could receive His righteousness, His peace, His rest.”
This invitation remains open today. We do not come to Christ with achievements or religious credentials. We come with empty hands and believing hearts. Mark beautifully summarises the gospel when he says, “Sinners come to Jesus the same way. Nothing to offer. No righteousness. No bargaining power. Just need. Just a plea. Cover me. Protect me. Redeem me.” Because Christ died and rose again, all who trust Him find lasting refuge. As Mark concludes, “Ruth found rest in the arms of a redeemer. We find rest in the finished work of the Redeemer.”
Begin each morning this week by praying, “Lord Jesus, my rest is found in You alone.” Let that truth shape how you work, lead your family, and face uncertainty. Before bed tonight, read Matthew 11:28–30 together. Ask each family member what burden they want Jesus to carry, then pray together, trusting the Redeemer whose refuge never fails.
