The legal proceedings had ended. Now the people responded with joyful prayer. They blessed Boaz and Ruth and asked God to do far more than establish a happy home. They prayed, “May the Lord make the woman who is entering your house like Rachel and Leah, who together built the house of Israel” (Ruth 4:11, CSB). As Mark Penrith explains, “Now, the elders pray for supernatural fruitfulness upon Ruth. A penniless, foreign widow elevated by grace to the status of Israel’s matriarch.” No one gathered at the city gate could have imagined how completely God would answer that prayer.
The blessing continued as the people prayed, “May your house become like the house of Perez” (Ruth 4:12, CSB). That request reached back to another surprising chapter in God’s plan of redemption. Mark reminds us, “The line of King David was born out of sacrificial redemption and divine sovereignty.” God did not build Israel’s royal family through human strength or flawless people. He worked through broken lives, unlikely circumstances, and His sovereign grace. Ruth was a foreign widow. Yet God chose her to become part of the family line that would lead to David.
The same pattern reaches its fulfilment in Jesus Christ. Mark observes, “If a local redeemer’s costly sacrifice built David’s temporary, earthly throne, how much more does our cosmic Redeemer’s costly death and vindicating resurrection establish the eternal throne of David?” God’s kingdom has always advanced by His grace, not by human achievement. The ordinary faithfulness of Boaz and Ruth became part of God’s extraordinary plan to bring the Saviour into the world. What seemed small at the time carried eternal significance.
Do not underestimate today’s ordinary obedience. Faithfully loving your spouse. Reading Scripture with your children. Serving your church. Speaking about Christ at work. These quiet acts may seem insignificant, but God delights to use them for His purposes. Teach your children that faithfulness matters more than fame. Help them see that God often works through ordinary people who trust Him. As Mark concludes, “This was not accomplished by human strength. Not by pure bloodlines. Not by fleshly striving. Yahweh alone did this.” The same faithful God is still building His kingdom today.

Father, thank You that You accomplish Your purposes through Your grace. Help me to remain faithful in the ordinary moments of life, trusting that You are at work for Your glory. Amen.
