Evans reminds us that Jesus does not merely tell His followers what to avoid. He also tells them what to pursue. He asks, “What has Jesus been trying to achieve then by saying seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness?” His answer is clear: “Jesus is correcting our perspective to life.” Jesus Himself commands, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you” (Matthew 6:33, CSB). Instead of allowing worry to consume our thoughts, Christ redirects our hearts toward God’s rule and God’s purposes.
Seeking God’s kingdom does not mean abandoning work, neglecting our responsibilities, or refusing to plan for the future. In fact, Jesus assumes His followers will continue working diligently and stewarding what God has entrusted to them. The difference lies in our motivation. Our careers, finances, families, and daily decisions are no longer centered on building our own security. They become opportunities to glorify Christ. When God’s kingdom becomes our highest priority, every other responsibility finds its proper place. The Father faithfully supplies everything His children need to accomplish His purposes.
Evans explains, “It means making God’s rule your priority in life. It means making God’s purposes your highest pursuit in life.” He also challenges his listeners with a searching question: “If you check last week’s schedule, did it reflect a man or a woman who has got priorities in his mind?” Those words invite honest reflection. Our calendars often reveal what our hearts truly treasure. Jesus calls us to seek His kingdom “today… It’s about now.” Every decision becomes an opportunity either to pursue our own agenda or to joyfully submit to the loving rule of our King. As we place His kingdom first, we discover that the Father already knows what we need and delights to provide for His children.
Take a few moments today to review your schedule. Ask yourself whether your priorities reflect Christ’s kingdom or your own ambitions. Identify one practical way to place God’s purposes ahead of your own agenda this week. Then gather your family and ask how your home can better reflect God’s priorities. Perhaps that means making time for family worship, serving someone in need, or intentionally encouraging another believer. Small acts of faithful obedience reveal a heart that seeks God’s kingdom first.
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me into Your kingdom and for giving my life an eternal purpose. Forgive me for the times I have placed my own plans ahead of Your will. Help me to seek Your kingdom first in my work, my home, and every decision I make. Shape my family’s priorities so that we gladly live for Your glory above our own comfort. Thank You for faithfully providing everything we need as we follow You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
