Jesus does not promise His followers a life without trouble. Instead, He teaches us how to face each day without carrying tomorrow’s burdens today. Evans reminds us, “Jesus is not promising that you’ll not face troubles that worry you.” Jesus says, “Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34, CSB). Tomorrow will bring its own challenges, but tomorrow is not outside God’s control. The Father who cares for us today will still be faithful when tomorrow arrives.
Worry often causes us to live in a future that God has not yet given us. We replay possible problems in our minds and try to solve circumstances that have not happened. We sacrifice today’s peace while trying to prepare ourselves for tomorrow’s uncertainty. But Jesus calls us back to the present. He does not tell us to ignore tomorrow or refuse to plan. He teaches us to trust God with tomorrow while faithfully obeying Him today. We can work today. We can pray today. We can serve today. We can love our families today. Tomorrow belongs to God.
Evans asks a question that reaches the heart of Christian confidence: “But the question is whom will you trust when those troubles come in life and in death?” He reminds us that our security cannot ultimately rest in what we have accumulated. Jesus has already told us, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you” (Matthew 6:33, CSB). Our confidence rests in Christ, not in our bank accounts, careers, possessions, or carefully constructed plans. Trouble will come. The question is whether we will trust the Lord when it does. The God who holds our future also holds us.
Today, refuse to borrow tomorrow’s trouble. Focus on the responsibilities God has placed before you right now. Do the work in front of you. Speak to your family. Serve someone. Pray about the concerns you cannot control, and then leave them with the Father. Before bed, gather your family and thank God for His faithfulness throughout the day. Commit tomorrow to Him together. Teach your children that trusting God does not mean knowing what tomorrow will bring. It means knowing who will be there when tomorrow comes.
Heavenly Father, thank You that tomorrow is already in Your hands. Forgive me for carrying burdens You never asked me to carry and for allowing fear of the future to distract me from faithfulness today. Help me to trust You with every uncertainty. Give me grace to work faithfully, love generously, serve joyfully, and obey You today. When tomorrow brings trouble, remind me that You will already be there. Teach my family to trust Christ in life and in death, knowing that He alone is our secure hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
