Grace Serves Pressing Needs

25 September 2026

Paul brings Titus 3 down to earth. The gospel does not stay in our heads. It moves into our hands. Paul writes, “Diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey, so that they will lack nothing.” Mark Penrith points out the ordinary nature of this instruction. “Not theological argument. Friendship. Partnership in the gospel.” Grace-saved people notice people. They notice needs. They look for ways to serve.

The command is simple. Help. But Paul adds, diligently. This means practical action. Give. Host. Send. Pray. Support. Mark says, “Support missionaries. Give. Host. Send. Pray. Grace-saved people are generous people.” We do not serve because God needs to be impressed by us. We serve because God has already shown us mercy. Grace produces generosity because grace teaches us that everything we have comes from God.

Paul then says, “Let our people learn to devote themselves to good works for pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.” Notice the words pressing needs. Not every request carries the same urgency. Mark gives us helpful questions. Is the need pressing? Is it real? Is it within your reach? Is it gospel-aligned? We cannot solve every problem around us. Mark reminds us, “You cannot do everything. You are not the Saviour. Christ is. You are a vessel.” That frees us from guilt while calling us to action.

So look around you today. Who needs help? A colleague may be struggling. A family member may face financial pressure. Someone in your church may need practical support. A missionary may need provision. Your children may need to see you serve without being asked. At dinner tonight, ask, “Who can we help this week?” Then look for one need within your reach. Mark says, “Serve urgent needs. The church is not a social club. It is a rescue station.” We do not serve to be noticed. We serve because we have received grace.

Father, thank You for the mercy You have shown us. Open our eyes to pressing needs around us. Give us wisdom to know what is ours to meet, and courage to serve when You give us the opportunity. Make our homes and church fruitful in good works. Amen.
