Jonah’s prayer reaches its climax with a truth every Christian needs to remember: “Salvation belongs to the LORD” (Jonah 2:9, CSB). Jonah had run from God. He had brought trouble upon himself. Yet the Lord rescued him from the depths. Mark Penrith reminds us that “He did nothing to earn it. And he knows exactly who to thank.” Jonah’s rescue depended entirely on God’s mercy and power. The same is true of our salvation. We did not earn God’s forgiveness. We could never make ourselves right with Him. We depend on His grace from beginning to end.
The Lord appointed the fish to swallow Jonah, and then He commanded it to release him. Jonah’s rescue came because God acted. But Jonah’s experience also points us to Jesus. Jesus explained, “For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights” (Matthew 12:40, CSB). Jonah went into the depths because of his rebellion. Jesus entered death to save rebels like us. Mark puts it this way: “Build it on Christ, who went down into the grave and rose on the third day.” Jesus bore the judgment our sins deserve and rose again. Our gratitude does not earn salvation. It flows from what Christ has already done.
How should we respond to such mercy? Jonah promised to worship the Lord with thanksgiving. Mark warns us, “Fear makes bold promises. Comfort forgets them.” We can make strong promises when life is difficult, only to drift when things become comfortable again. So do not build your Christian life on the strength of your resolve. Build it on Christ. Begin today by thanking God for specific ways He has rescued, forgiven, and sustained you. If you have been drifting, confess your sin and take one concrete step towards obedience. Let gratitude shape how you work, how you treat your wife, and how you care for your children. At supper, ask each family member to name one thing they thank God for. Then pray together. As Mark says, “Rehearse the gospel each morning.” Let thanksgiving become part of ordinary family life.
The Lord who rescued Jonah is worthy of our wholehearted devotion. We do not obey to earn His mercy. We obey because He has shown us mercy in Christ. Mark’s reminder is simple: “Thank the Lord who saves rebels like you. Not because he needs it. Because you do.” Father, thank You for saving us through Jesus. Keep us from drifting into forgetfulness. Fill our homes, our work, and our relationships with grateful obedience. Amen.
