Humility Sustains the Mission

16 January 2026

Humility marks the turning point of the passage. Advice has been given. Wisdom has been offered. Now the question becomes personal. Will Moses listen? Scripture answers without hesitation. “Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said.” There is no delay. No defence. Mark Penrith captured the weight of the moment. “No debate. No hesitation. No defence of his former method.” The great leader shows greatness not by insisting, but by submitting.

This obedience costs Moses something. Pride. Reputation. Control. He is the man who speaks with God face to face, yet he receives counsel from a Midianite priest. Scripture records it plainly. “Moses listened.” Mark pressed the point home. “The man who spoke face-to-face with God submitted to the counsel of a Midianite priest.” Authority does not excuse humility. True leadership depends on it.

Moses does more than agree. He acts. Scripture says, “Moses chose able men from all Israel and made them leaders over the people.” He applies the counsel fully. Mark described the care involved. “Deliberate selection. Strict criteria.” Moses does not appoint friends or favourites. He obeys God’s wisdom through Jethro’s words. Humility moves from the ear to the hands.

The result is stability. Scripture shows the outcome. “They judged the people at all times.” The system works because the leader humbled himself to implement it. Mark summarised the transformation. “The crisis of solitary burnout was solved by structured plurality.” Humility protects both leader and people. Without it, wisdom stays theoretical. With it, the mission advances.

Jethro leaves. Scripture says, “Moses let his father-in-law go, and he journeyed to his own land.” That quiet ending matters. Mark explained its significance. “Jethro’s departure proves the system is self-sustaining.” Moses no longer depends on Jethro’s presence. Humble obedience has created enduring health. The leader is preserved. The people are served.

This lesson presses close. Pride resists counsel. Insecurity deflects correction. Yet humility sustains the mission. Invite wise input from one trusted believer this week. Listen without defending yourself. At home, practice the same posture. Apologise quickly when corrected. Let humility be visible. Mark’s words linger with needed force. “His humility was his wisdom.” God uses humble leaders to protect His people and advance His work.

What keeps us from receiving counsel even when it is wise?

Prayer:
Father, give us humble hearts that listen and obey. Free us from pride and defensiveness. Use humility to preserve us and strengthen Your mission. Amen.
