Monday, December 23’s devotional. Psalm 98:4 calls out to all creation: “Let the whole earth shout to the Lord; be jubilant, shout for joy, and sing.” This verse captures the essence of exuberant, unrestrained worship—a theme that resonates throughout the psalm. Mark Penrith describes this as “a resounding whoop of delight” that bursts forth from a heart captivated by God’s greatness and salvation.
Imagine the most electrifying moment you’ve experienced—a stadium erupting in cheers for a last-minute goal or a triumphant victory. Mark likens this to Psalm 98’s invitation to a cosmic celebration, one not confined to a fleeting victory but encompassing all creation. “In verse 4, the whole earth rises to its feet to cheer for their victor. And it’s God Almighty they praise!”
This call to praise is both expansive and personal. The psalmist extends worship beyond Israel to include every nation and person, echoing the prophetic vision of Scripture. From Genesis 12:3’s promise of blessing to all peoples through Abraham’s seed to Revelation 7:9-10’s vision of a redeemed multitude from every tribe and language, the message is clear: “The whole earth must worship Yahweh,” as Mark notes.
But how should this worship look? The verse commands us to “shout for joy.” This isn’t a quiet, measured response but an overwhelming eruption of praise. Mark challenges us, “Think of how you shout when Cheslin Kolbe sidesteps a tackler to score. Your response to the greatest victory, the salvation of your soul, must be a resounding whoop of delight.”
Worship, however, is more than volume; it’s the overflow of a heart transformed by the gospel. The Benoni Baptist Church covenant reminds us that “we seek to walk together in brotherly love and unity,” and part of this unity is found in our collective praise. God’s people gather to declare the wonderful works of God in song and praise, shaking the gates of hell with their victory cry.
Today, let Psalm 98:4 guide your response to God. Praise Him aloud—whether through song, prayer, or spoken word. Let the joy of your salvation fill your heart and resound in your voice.
Prayer: Lord, fill my heart with joy and my mouth with praise. Let my worship reflect Your greatness and the salvation You have given me. Amen.
