Heartfelt Praise to the King

This week’s series of blog posts have been created from Mark’s notes rather than a transcript of the sermon. This hopefully will give you additional insight into the passage. You can download Mark’s sermon notes below.

Thursday, December 26’s devotional. Psalm 98:6 proclaims, “With trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn shout triumphantly in the presence of the Lord, our King.” This verse directs us to honor King Jesus with worship that is heartfelt and reverent. As Mark Penrith explains, “Our corporate worship, even now, is before King Jesus. Your response to the greatest victory—the salvation of your soul—must be heartfelt praise before King Jesus.”

Jesus is not just any king. He is the King of kings, fulfilling God’s promise to David that “Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever, and your throne will be established forever” (2 Samuel 7:16). Mark reminds us that this promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus, “the Messiah, who was given the title ‘Son of David’ and is the rightful King in the Davidic line.”

Isaiah 9:6 gives us a glimpse of this King’s reign: “For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Mark notes, “The baby born in the manger is the High King of heaven. Emmanuel, which means, God with us.” In Jesus, we see a ruler whose reign is characterized by peace, justice, and righteousness—attributes that inspire our reverent worship.

Acknowledging Jesus as King means recognizing His authority over every aspect of our lives. The Benoni Baptist Church’s covenant calls believers to “seek to live according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh, believing that God is holy and that those who seek to be called by His name must be holy too.” Our worship becomes an expression of this submission, as we align our lives with His will.

Today, take time to meditate on Revelation 19:16, which describes Jesus as “King of kings and Lord of lords.” Let this truth deepen your reverence for Him. Reflect also on Isaiah 9:6, thanking Jesus for the peace and justice His eternal reign brings. As Mark urges, “Lift up your voice with strength, and praise the LORD!”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are my King. I thank You for Your eternal reign of peace and justice. Help me to worship You with a heart fully surrendered to Your authority. Amen.
