The Birth of a Living Hope

Wednesday, April 30’s devotional. In a world often drenched in despair, Peter’s words in 1 Peter 1:3 shine brightly: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” Robin reminded us in the sermon that this hope is not “the kind of hope that the non-Christian has,” like wishing for good luck or better circumstances. It is a living hope, firmly rooted in the historic resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without His resurrection, there is no new birth, and without new birth, there is no living hope.

The new birth that Peter speaks of is not something we can manufacture; it is the sovereign work of God alone. As Jesus said in John 3:3, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” This spiritual birth Robins the beginning of a vibrant, unshakeable hope that transcends every trial we face. Without Jesus’ resurrection, there is no hope for mankind. Life would be meaningless and hopeless. How precious it is, then, that God in His mercy chose to bring us to life through Christ!

Reflecting on the harshness of the world, Robin shared: “We live in a world where hope for a better world, hope for a better life, hope for a better future has all but disappeared.” Yet the believer’s hope remains alive because it is anchored not in earthly circumstances but in the resurrection. It is not subject to the whims of economies, politics, or personal success. Rather, it is “an intense anticipation, a confident expectation,” because it rests on the unwavering promise of God.

Today, if you feel weighed down by the hopelessness around you, remember that your living hope has already been secured by Christ’s victory over death. Your new birth guarantees a future that “can never perish, spoil, or fade, kept in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4). Let your heart be lifted by this truth: your hope is as alive as the risen Savior Himself.

Let us pray:
Gracious Father, we praise You for the mercy that gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Strengthen our hearts when the world tempts us toward despair. Anchor our souls in the certainty of Your promises. Help us to live each day in the vibrant assurance of our living hope, eagerly awaiting the glorious inheritance You have kept for us. In Jesus’ precious name we pray, Amen.
