More Than Conquerors

God is for us

Friday, 18 July’s devotional.

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:37, CSB).

Christian hope is not a fragile thread clinging to survival. It is a battle cry anchored in the victory of Christ. Paul does not say that we will avoid suffering or skip the struggle. He says that right in the middle of “all these things”—affliction, distress, famine, danger—“we are more than conquerors.”

Mark puts it this way: “This is not mere survival. This is supernatural triumph.” The phrase “more than conquerors” in Greek, hypernikaō, speaks of overwhelming, surpassing, extraordinary victory. It is not a quiet endurance but a confident overcoming. Not because we are strong, but because Christ is.

For Rome, victory meant Caesar’s might, territory seized, enemies crushed. But for believers, victory means something different. “True victory flows from Christ’s sacrificial loss,” Mark says. He is the Lamb slain who now reigns. Your triumph is not defined by worldly success but by belonging to the One who loved you and gave Himself for you.

Your day may feel like a battlefield—meetings, carpool runs, deadlines. The opposition may be discouragement, temptation, or fear. But even in that, you are not defeated. “Your suffering, however brutal, is not defeat. Your pain, however piercing, is not abandonment,” Mark reminds us.

Jesus does not just help you escape. He enables you to endure and emerge with a strength not your own. His love is not passive. It is the power that makes you more than a conqueror. “In the circumstance, Christ’s love forges you into an unshakeable victor.”

Update your email signature with the phrase, “More than conquerors (Rom 8:37).” Let it declare where your confidence lies.

Over dinner or at bedtime, ask each child to share one “win” from their day, however small. Celebrate each one together as “conquerors in Christ.”

How can you walk into today’s “battlefields” expecting conquest rather than mere survival?

Father, when life feels like a fight, remind me that I am more than a conqueror through Jesus. Give me courage not just to endure but to trust that Your love secures every victory. Amen.
