Share in Suffering by God’s Power

Wednesday October 1

Instead, share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God. He has saved us and called us with a holy calling… according to his own purpose and grace… now made evident through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who has abolished death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

Suffering. It is not optional. It is inevitable. Timothy is called to share in it. Not from a distance. Not in theory. But in reality. Shoulder to shoulder with Paul. In the cause of the gospel.

Rome is no friend of Christ. Nero burns Christians as torches in his gardens. Believers are hunted. Imprisoned. Killed. Timothy knows this. His fears are real. His timidity understandable. Yet Paul urges him to embrace suffering—not by his own strength—but relying on the power of God.

This is the key. Suffering for Christ cannot be borne in the flesh. Human courage falters. Human resolve weakens. But divine power sustains. God’s grace strengthens the fainthearted. His Spirit emboldens the timid. His power enables endurance.

Why embrace suffering? Paul gives the reason. God has saved us. God has called us. Not because of our works. Not because of merit. But according to His own purpose and grace. Salvation is anchored in eternity past. It is secured in Christ. It is revealed through His appearing. This gospel is no human invention. It is divine in origin. Eternal in scope. Glorious in purpose.

And this gospel concerns a Saviour who abolished death. He did not weaken it. He destroyed it. He brought life and immortality to light. Death now stands defeated. Eternity now shines clearly. This truth changes everything.

Therefore… share in suffering. Do not rely on yourself. Rely on the power of God. He who called you will sustain you. He who saved you will keep you. He who raised Christ will raise you too.

Brother… Sister… The path of the gospel is marked with thorns. But it ends in glory. Do not fear the fire. Trust the God who walks with you in it.
