Paul writes, “Do not be conformed to this age” (Romans 12:2a). Those words are both a warning and a command. In his sermon, Mark Penrith said, “The world is actively trying to squeeze believers into its shape, its pattern, its system of values.” Every day, you are being moulded—by screens, by schedules, by success stories. The world calls for your conformity. Christ calls for your resistance.
Mark explained, “The word Paul uses for conformed literally means to be pressed into a mould, to be shaped outwardly by something external.” The pressure is constant. The world tells you how to think, what to desire, and where to find happiness. It wants you to fit in, to blend, to follow the flow. But God’s mercy demands a different pattern. You cannot be both conformed to the world and transformed by Christ. The two are at war.
Mark said, “This age is marked by rebellion against God, by self-worship and moral compromise. It loves darkness and hates light.” That is the world’s mould. It values comfort over conviction and popularity over purity. It applauds pride and mocks humility. But followers of Christ must resist this pattern. Resistance begins by recognising where the world has already shaped you. It may be your ambitions, your habits, or your entertainment. Where are you letting the world decide what matters most?
Mark reminded us, “You will never drift toward holiness. You must intentionally resist conformity to the world.” That resistance requires choice. Choose one worldly influence to limit this week. It may be the constant scroll of social media, the quiet indulgence of gossip, or the pursuit of more. Replace that influence with Scripture or prayer. Fill the empty space with truth. When you resist the world, you make room for the Spirit to renew your mind.
Discuss this together as a family. Mark said, “Parents, your children are being shaped every day. Teach them to see the moulds the world wants to press them into and how to resist by grace.” Talk about one worldly pattern you want to break as a family, and replace it with a Christ-honouring habit. Holiness begins at home.
Where are you most tempted to conform to the world’s pattern?
Prayer: Lord, guard my heart from the world’s mould. Shape me by Your Word instead. Amen.
