Paul closes with a command that is both precise and piercing. “Make no provision for the flesh to gratify its desires” (Romans 13:14b, CSB). Mark Penrith did not soften it. He said, “The command is ruthless. Starve the darkness.” After telling us to put on the Lord Jesus Christ, Paul immediately addresses the enemy within. The flesh does not die quietly. It survives on what we supply.
Provision implies planning. Intention. Quiet allowance. Mark exposed the subtlety. “To make provision is to plan for its survival. To stockpile its food. To leave a door unlocked.” Sin rarely dominates without preparation. It grows in small permissions. A lingering glance. A rehearsed grievance. A justified resentment. Paul commands decisive refusal. Do not prepare space for what Christ died to defeat.
The flesh represents the old age. The night that is fading. Mark described it as “your old, night bound nature.” It whispers that indulgence will satisfy. It promises relief. Yet it enslaves. Gospel love cannot flourish where flesh is fed. Paul’s command is protective. He is not limiting joy. He is guarding it. Love grows best in disciplined soil.
Mark pressed this home with practical clarity. “Do not feed the grudge with rehearsal. Do not feed the lust with a glance. Do not feed the jealousy with comparison. Cut off its supply.” Starvation weakens what once felt strong. The Spirit strengthens what once felt fragile. The Christian life is not passive. It involves deliberate choices. Remove the app. End the conversation. Redirect the thought. Take action.
This is not moral self improvement. It flows from union with Christ. Mark reminded us, “You are not mustering this love from your own heart. You are putting on a Person.” Because you belong to Christ, you can refuse the flesh. Because you wear His righteousness, you can choose obedience. Starving sin makes room for love. Feeding light strengthens joy.
Paul leaves us with urgency. Darkness is fading. The day is near. Therefore, do not assist what God is ending. Refuse to cooperate with your old master. Live as one who belongs to the dawn. Gospel love thrives when flesh is denied.
Prayer:
Father, expose the provisions we make for sin. Give us courage to remove them. Strengthen us to walk in the light of Christ today. Amen.
