“Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely” (Isaiah 53:10, CSB). Mark Penrith brought us here. He reminded us that “the Lord was pleased to crush. Not because He enjoys agony. Because the crushing leads to life.” That line settles the tension. God does not delight in pain. He delights in saving. The Servant stands at the centre. Crushed. Wounded. Given. And yet not defeated. “The crushing is not defeat. The crushing is the pathway to promise.” You must see this. The cross is not an accident. It is the plan.
Mark showed us the weight of this moment. “The Old Covenant could not remove guilt. Could not produce life.” Sacrifices came and went. Blood flowed. Guilt remained. Then came the Servant. “The crushing would do what lambs could not.” He becomes the guilt offering. Not symbol. Substance. Not shadow. Reality. “His Servant would actually carry iniquity. Actually justify guilt.” This is why the Father willed it. This is why the Son submitted to it. Real atonement. Real payment. Real life for the guilty.
Now bring it home. “The Lord is pleased with the outcome. The warmth. The light. The life of his family.” That is you. That is me. Christ was crushed so you might live. Not try harder. Not perform better. Live. “The log burns. The family lives.” So start your day here. Before emails. Before meetings. Before pressure. Say it plainly. Jesus was crushed for me. You do not earn life today. You receive it. You walk in it. You rest in it.
And lead your family here. Keep it simple. Keep it clear. “He was crushed, so you might live.” Say it at the table. Say it in the car. Say it again tomorrow. Your children do not need complexity. They need clarity. Christ took the punishment. We receive the life. This is the centre. Do not move from it.
So answer honestly. Are you still trying to earn what Christ has already secured? Or will you receive what He has freely given? “The crushing leads to life.” Will you live like it?
Lord, I confess that I try to earn what You have already given. Teach me to rest in Christ. Fix my eyes on the crushed Servant. Let me live today in the life He purchased. Amen.
