Obedience Together

7 May 2026

The Word lands, and the people respond. “Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people obeyed the Lord their God.” No delay. No resistance. No negotiation. As Mark Penrith observes, “notice the order. The leaders first. The people follow.” Yet something deeper is happening. “This is not a collection of individuals. This is a remnant.” One people. One response. God speaks once, and they move together.

Their obedience is immediate and shared. “They obeyed the Lord their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him.” The authority is clear. The response is clear. Mark says, “the word cut. They did not duck. The word exposed. They did not defend. The word commanded. They obeyed.” This is not partial obedience. This is not delayed obedience. This is a whole people bending the knee together.

And the text adds a crucial phrase. “So the people feared the Lord.” This is not panic. It is reverence. It is weight. Mark explains, “this is not terror. It is the fear that takes God at His word and moves.” True fear of the Lord does not freeze you. It moves you. It produces action. It turns reflection into obedience. It turns hearing into doing.

Notice how this plays out. No one stands back. No one waits for another. Mark highlights it, “no one holds back to see if another will step forward. No one waits for private confirmation.” The whole community moves. Together. This is how God often works. Not only in individuals, but in a people. Faithfulness grows in community. Obedience strengthens in shared commitment.

So take one step today. Clear. Concrete. Do not wait for ideal conditions. Do not wait for a better season. Act on what God has already said. And involve someone else. A brother. A friend. Your family. Walk it out together. Mark reminds us, “they laid down the hammer on their own house and picked the hammer up for His.” That is the shift. That is obedience.

Let your children see this. Let them watch you respond to God’s Word quickly and gladly. Not perfectly. But sincerely. Show them what it means to take God seriously.

Question:
What would immediate obedience look like for you today?

Prayer:
Lord, give me a heart that hears and obeys. Help me to act quickly, and to walk in obedience with others. Amen.
