I Am With You

8 May 2026

The people obeyed. Then God spoke again. “Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, delivered the Lord’s message to the people: ‘I am with you, this is the Lord’s declaration.’” Four simple words. Yet they change everything. As Mark Penrith says, “the God who summoned the drought now summons His people to courage.” God does not only expose sin. He draws near to sinners. He does not only command obedience. He promises His presence.

Notice when this promise comes. Not after the temple stood finished. Not after years of proven faithfulness. The people had only just begun. Mark highlights this clearly, “the presence that withdrew in judgment now returns in mercy. Not because they have finished the work. Because they have begun.” God meets His people at the point of obedience. Weak obedience. Early obedience. Imperfect obedience. Yet real obedience.

This matters deeply because obedience can feel costly. You step into difficult conversations. You serve when tired. You lead your family when you feel weak. You try to honour Christ at work while others compromise. Fear rises quickly. Discouragement follows close behind. Yet God still says, “I am with you.” Mark writes, “He does not say the work will be easy. He does not say the enemies will vanish. He says something better. I am with you.” His presence is the strength.

And this promise reaches its fullness in Christ. Mark explains, “the presence promised conditionally in Haggai has come unconditionally in Christ.” Jesus bore the curse for us. He secured the permanent presence of God for His people. “He is not the presence that comes and goes. He is the presence that came and stayed.” Because Christ died and rose again, believers never labour alone.

So remember this today. As you step into what God has called you to do, at work, at home, in church, you do not go alone. Christ is with you. When you pray with your children. When you resist temptation. When you serve quietly. When you repent quickly. His presence does not wait at the finish line. It walks with you now.

Teach your children this truth. Wherever we obey God, He is with us. Let them hear it often. Let them see you believe it.

Question:
How would your attitude change if you truly believed God is with you in your obedience?

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your presence. Help me to obey with confidence, knowing You are with me every step. Amen.
