Ruth 1 ends with a simple statement that could easily be overlooked. After all the grief, loss, and tears, Scripture says, “They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest” (Ruth 1:22). Naomi believed her story had reached a bitter conclusion. She had declared, “I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty” (Ruth 1:21). Yet Mark Penrith reminds us that “Naomi’s despair will not have the final say.” While Naomi focused on what she had lost, God was already preparing what would come next.
The final verse quietly reveals that God was at work behind the scenes. Mark observes, “Human logic has completely miscalculated the situation. Sovereign grace has been with her.” Naomi claimed she returned empty, yet Ruth stood beside her. Naomi believed she was arriving at an ending, but the harvest signalled a new beginning. As Mark puts it, “She thinks she is facing an ending. God is staging a beginning.” The Lord’s providence had not disappeared during her suffering. It had guided every step of her journey.
This is often how God works in our lives. We see only the present moment. We feel the immediate pain. We focus on the closed door, the unanswered prayer, or the unexpected disappointment. Yet God sees the whole story. Mark illustrates this reality with the picture of a lost traveller and concludes, “When we go through hell, our pain clouds our field of vision.” Then he adds, “We become blind to the good gifts God positions right in front of our faces.” God’s providence continues to operate even when we cannot perceive it.
The gospel gives us even greater confidence. Ruth’s story ultimately leads to King David. David’s line leads to Jesus Christ. What appeared to be a tragedy became part of God’s redemptive plan for the world. Mark reminds us that “the sovereign Lord provided an ultimate, unexpected covenant companion.” Through Christ, God takes broken stories and weaves them into His perfect purposes. Nothing is wasted. No sorrow is meaningless. No hardship falls outside His sovereign care.
Perhaps you carry a burden today that discourages you. Bring it before the Lord. Entrust the outcome to His wisdom and goodness. Remember Mark’s encouragement: “The Lord has provided a covenant companion to overcome bitter despair.” Share with your children a time when God used a difficult circumstance for good, even though you could not see it at first. Then thank Him that He is still writing your story.
Discussion Question: Where do you need to trust that God is working behind the scenes even when you cannot yet see the outcome?
Prayer: Father, help me trust Your providence when I cannot see what You are doing. Strengthen my faith and remind me that You are always working for Your glory and my good. Amen.
