“Yes, it is true that I am a family redeemer, but there is a redeemer closer than I am. Stay here tonight, and in the morning, if he wants to redeem you, that’s good. Let him redeem you. But if he doesn’t want to redeem you, as the Lord lives, I will.”
Waiting becomes easier when we know how the story ends. Ruth did not have that privilege. She had placed herself entirely in Boaz’s hands, yet another obstacle remained. A closer redeemer had the first legal right to redeem her. In his sermon, Mark Penrith explains, “What is keeping Boaz and Ruth apart is a legality. There is a relative closer than Boaz.” Although Boaz longed to redeem Ruth, he would not ignore God’s appointed means to obtain the outcome he desired.
Boaz’s integrity shines brightly in a culture marked by compromise. Mark observes, “Unlike Naomi, who wanted the right thing the wrong way, Boaz will adhere strictly to the laws of his people. He will trust God for the outcome. He will only accept the right thing the right way.” That kind of faith requires patience. It refuses to manipulate circumstances. It waits for God to open the right door. Proverbs 3:6 reminds us, “In all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Many of us struggle here. We pray for God to act, but then we quietly try to manage the result ourselves. We become impatient when answers are delayed. We fear that waiting means doing nothing. Yet biblical waiting is active trust. Mark captures the heart of this passage when he says, “Rest requires bold initiative and patient submission to God’s appointed means.” Faith obeys what God has revealed, then leaves the outcome in His hands. That is exactly what Boaz did.
Is there an unresolved situation causing you anxiety today? Bring it before the Lord in prayer. Ask Him to help you trust His wisdom instead of your own plans. Then choose not to manipulate the outcome. If you have children, share one prayer request that your family is still waiting on God to answer. Pray together and remind them that God’s timing is always wiser than ours.
