Boaz did not hesitate when the moment of decision arrived. The nearer redeemer stepped away. Boaz stepped forward. Before the elders and the people, he publicly accepted the responsibility of redemption. He declared, “You are witnesses today that I am buying from Naomi everything that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon. I have also acquired Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife” (Ruth 4:9–10, CSB). As Mark Penrith said, “The champion does not hesitate.” Boaz counted the cost and willingly accepted it for the good of another.
This was far more than a legal transaction. It was an act of covenant love. Boaz accepted the financial burden, restored a family’s future, and removed their disgrace. Mark describes the moment beautifully, “He takes her as she is, a destitute foreigner. He lifts her status to what she will be, his cherished wife.” Boaz did not look for an easier path. He embraced the responsibility because redemption required sacrifice.
Boaz points us to the greater Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Mark reminds us, “Jesus stepped into our ruin. Jesus looked at our spiritual insolvency. Jesus chose to redeem unworthy, destitute sinners at the infinite personal cost of His own precious blood to secure an eternal legacy.” Jesus did not shrink back from the cross. He bore our sin. He endured God’s judgment in our place. Then He rose again in victory. As Mark also declares, “Jesus did not ask for a discount. Jesus absorbed our debt. Jesus died under our curse. Jesus rose from the grave to guarantee our hope.” That is the foundation of our salvation.
Christ’s faithfulness shapes the way we live each day. Thank Him today for taking your place. Then let gratitude produce faithfulness in your own life. Keep your promises at work. Honour your marriage covenant. Serve faithfully in your local church. Lead your family with integrity. Your children do not need a perfect father. They need one who consistently keeps his word because he belongs to a faithful Saviour. As Mark exhorts believers, “Keep your covenant commitments in your marriage, your parenting, and your church.” Christ has been faithful to you. Follow Him in faithful obedience.
Prayer
Father, thank You for sending Jesus to take my place and secure my salvation. Help me to reflect His faithfulness by keeping my commitments with integrity, for Your glory. Amen.
