John moves from celebrating Gaius’s walk with Christ to commending his practical support for gospel workers. He writes, “Dear friend, you are acting faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers and sisters, especially when they are strangers” (3 John 5, CSB). Mark Penrith explains, “Faith in action.” Gaius did not simply agree with the gospel. He invested in those who proclaimed it. Mark reminds us, “Gaius did not offer vague spiritual sympathy. He opened his home.” His generosity demonstrated that his commitment to the truth was real.
The missionaries John describes depended entirely on the kindness of fellow believers. They travelled “for the sake of the Name,” refusing financial support from unbelievers so that the gospel would never appear to be a business venture. John therefore says, “Therefore, we ought to support such people so that we can be coworkers with the truth” (3 John 8, CSB). Mark explains, “When you support those who carry the Name, you are not just paying a bill. You are an active coworker with the truth itself.” Every believer has a place in God’s mission. Some are sent. Others faithfully send.
This truth should encourage those who never stand behind a pulpit or travel overseas as missionaries. The Lord uses every act of faithful generosity to advance His kingdom. Mark illustrates this well when he says, “The frontline worker and the supply provider have different jobs but are on the same mission.” Your prayers matter. Your giving matters. Your hospitality matters. As Mark says, “Commitment to truth is shown by costly support of gospel workers.” God delights to use ordinary believers to accomplish extraordinary gospel work.
Take a few minutes today to pray for one missionary your church supports. Ask the Lord to strengthen, protect, and encourage them. Then ask how you can become a more faithful coworker with the truth. Perhaps you can give more generously, send an encouraging message, or welcome gospel workers into your home. Gather your family and pray together for a missionary family. Help your children understand that when God’s people gladly support those who go, they also share in the work of making Christ known. As Mark reminds us, “Standing with the sent when it costs proves you stand with the truth.”
