John opens his third letter with deep affection for Gaius. Mark reminds us that this affection was rooted in something far greater than friendship. John writes, “To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.” Four times in these opening verses, John returns to the theme of truth. As Mark says, “Truth is no abstract concept. Truth is the solid, unyielding reality of who God is and what He has declared.” This is the foundation of the Christian life. Truth is not an idea we admire. It is the reality we are called to live.
John’s greatest joy was not that Gaius enjoyed good health or material success. Instead, he writes, “I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are walking in truth” (3 John 4, CSB). Mark observes, “John’s greater joy is not grounded in Gaius’s health, wealth, or happiness. John’s greater joy is grounded in this, Gaius is walking in truth.” That challenges us to consider what we celebrate most. We often measure success by promotions, possessions, or personal comfort. God measures it by faithful obedience.
Walking in the truth means that the gospel shapes ordinary life. It influences how we work, how we love our spouses, how we parent our children, and how we treat others. As Mark says, “Belief may be in your heart, but it doesn’t stay invisible. Salvation looks like something. Faith moves the feet.” Genuine faith produces visible fruit. The people around us should see that Christ is changing us from the inside out.
As you head into another busy day, pause before you leave home. Ask yourself, “Will my choices today show that I belong to Christ?” Look for one opportunity to display the truth through honesty, patience, kindness, or faithful obedience. Around the dinner table tonight, ask your children what it means to walk with Jesus. Help them see that following Christ is not reserved for Sundays. It is lived every day. After all, as Mark reminds us, “Standing with the sent when it costs proves you stand with the truth.”

Father, thank You for revealing Your truth through Your Son. Help me to walk faithfully today so that my words and actions reflect Christ. Let my family see the beauty of following You each day. Amen.
