John now introduces a striking contrast. Gaius faithfully supported gospel workers, but Diotrephes opposed them. John writes, “I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have first place among them, does not receive our authority” (3 John 9, CSB). Mark Penrith explains, “Diotrephes is no cartoon villain.” Instead, he was “a prominent local church leader” whose pride had displaced his devotion to Christ. Mark continues, “He fears losing control. He wants pre-eminence in the meeting, in the leadership, and in the community.” Pride will always place self above the truth.
John goes on to expose the fruit of that pride. Diotrephes slandered the apostles, rejected faithful gospel workers, and even removed those who welcomed them. As John writes, “He not only refuses to welcome fellow believers, but he even stops those who want to do so and expels them from the church” (3 John 10, CSB). Mark observes, “Unchecked pride is never static. It demands action.” What began as self promotion became open opposition to God’s work. A heart that seeks first place will eventually resist anyone who threatens it.
Following Christ will sometimes bring similar opposition. We may not face excommunication, but we will encounter situations where obedience costs us approval. Standing for biblical truth may create tension at work, among friends, or even within a church. Mark reminds us, “Standing for the truth means you will lose peace with the proud.” Yet he also encourages us with this reminder, “Commitment to truth is shown by costly support of gospel workers, even when opposed.” Faithfulness is not measured by comfort. It is measured by obedience.
Ask the Lord today for courage to stand firm when following Him becomes costly. Refuse to compromise the truth simply to avoid criticism or gain acceptance. Instead, seek Christ’s approval above all else. Talk with your children about why following Jesus is not always easy. Help them understand that pleasing Christ is worth more than winning the applause of people. As Mark reminds us, “Standing with the sent when it costs proves you stand with the truth.”

Father, guard my heart from pride and give me courage to stand for Your truth. Help me to seek Your approval above the praise of people and to remain faithful whatever the cost. Amen.
