John now turns from a negative example to a positive one. After exposing the pride of Diotrephes, he urges Gaius to follow a different path. John writes, “Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God, the one who does evil has not seen God” (3 John 11, CSB). Mark Penrith explains, “The command is simple. It is stark.” He continues, “Do not copy the arrogant. But do do what is good.” The Christian life is shaped by the examples we choose to follow.
John reminds us that our actions reveal the condition of our hearts. Mark says, “Goodness is not a self-generated human virtue. Good originates with God.” He continues, “Conduct reveals spiritual lineage. Behaviour exposes the heart.” Our lives do not earn God’s favour, but they do demonstrate that we belong to Him. As we walk with Christ, His character increasingly becomes visible in our words, attitudes, and decisions.
John then introduces Demetrius as a man whose life reflected the truth. He writes, “Everyone speaks well of Demetrius, even the truth itself. And we also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true” (3 John 12, CSB). Mark observes, “His character is proven.” He describes Demetrius with these memorable words, “Place the straight edge of God’s truth against his life, and the alignment was indisputable.” Demetrius did not seek attention or position. His quiet faithfulness spoke for itself because it consistently matched God’s Word.
Take some time today to think about the people who influence your walk with Christ. Identify one mature believer whose life consistently reflects humility, integrity, and obedience. Ask the Lord to help you imitate those qualities this week. Talk with your children about the importance of choosing role models who love Christ rather than simply following those who are popular or successful. As Mark reminds us, “Look past the noise of the proud and fix your eyes on proven, quiet, gospel-hearted integrity.” This is the kind of life that points others to Christ.
