Why Are You Worried?

3 August 2026

“Let me begin by asking you a very important question this morning. Why are you worried?” Evans begins his sermon with a question that reaches every heart. He reminds us that “worry is not a stranger to your heart” because it follows us into our homes, workplaces, and sleepless nights. Jesus addresses that same struggle in Matthew 6:25-26, saying, “Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?” (CSB). Worry is not simply about difficult circumstances. It exposes where we are looking for security and whether we truly believe our heavenly Father is enough.

Jesus spoke these words to ordinary people whose next meal often depended on the next day’s work. Their concerns were genuine, yet Christ exposed something deeper than financial hardship. He challenged the perspective that life is measured by possessions or protected by careful planning. The same temptation confronts us today. We worry about our careers, our children’s future, our health, or our finances because our hearts are tempted to find security in things that cannot ultimately sustain us. Christ gently redirects our attention from temporary needs to the Father’s faithful care.

Evans reminds us, “The problem with our worry is not that we have lived to believe the right thing. We have lived to believe a lie.” Jesus then points His disciples to creation itself. “Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?” (Matthew 6:26, CSB). The birds do not ignore work, but neither do they imagine they control tomorrow. They live under the Father’s care. If God faithfully provides for His creation every day, we can trust Him to provide everything we need to accomplish His purposes.

Take a moment today to ask yourself, “What am I believing about God right now?” Instead of allowing anxious thoughts to dominate your mind, turn them into prayer. If you have children, speak openly about the worries each family member is carrying this week. Then pray together, reminding one another that your heavenly Father already knows every need before you ask Him.

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I place my confidence in temporary things instead of in You. Thank You for caring for Your creation and for lovingly watching over Your children. Help me to trust Your wisdom more than my fears and Your promises more than my circumstances. Teach my family to rest in Your faithful care each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
