Jesus does not simply tell His disciples to stop worrying. He gives them a new way to see the world around them. Evans says, “Jesus takes his disciples into his classroom,” and the lesson begins with creation itself. He urges us to hear Christ’s command, “Consider the birds of the sky.” In Matthew 6:26-30, Jesus says, “Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?” (CSB). Every bird and every flower quietly testifies to the faithful care of the Father.
The birds do not possess savings accounts, insurance policies, or storehouses for tomorrow. Yet they never exist outside God’s loving care. Jesus is not encouraging laziness. Birds actively search for food and care for their young, but they never imagine that their survival depends entirely on themselves. Their confidence rests in the God who provides. The same heavenly Father who sustains His creation also watches over His children. Every sunrise reminds us that His mercies are new. Every meal reminds us that His hand is still open to provide.
Evans reminds us, “God has graciously made his creation our teacher for us.” He continues, “Observe. Look, look, and learn.” Jesus points beyond the beauty of creation to the character of the Creator. He says, “If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you—you of little faith?” (Matthew 6:30, CSB). The flowers bloom for only a short season, yet God clothes them with breathtaking beauty. If the Father lavishes such care upon grass that quickly fades, His children can trust that He knows exactly what they need and will faithfully provide according to His perfect wisdom.
Spend a few minutes outdoors today. Watch the birds. Notice the flowers. Let creation redirect your attention from your problems to your Provider. Thank God for the ways He has already cared for you. Then take a short walk with your family and ask your children what the birds and flowers teach them about God. As you talk together, remind one another that the God who cares for His creation will never neglect His own people.
Heavenly Father, thank You for filling Your world with daily reminders of Your faithful care. Forgive me for allowing worry to blind me to Your goodness. Help me to see beyond creation and worship the Creator who lovingly sustains every living thing. Teach my family to trust You more deeply as we remember Your constant provision. Strengthen our faith so that we rest confidently in Your unfailing care. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
