Nominated elder examination

Benoni Baptist Church has announced Gerhard Wessels as a nomination for the office of elder. We will conduct a nominated elder examination before our annual general meeting. A nominated elder examination is a formal but open meeting where the congregation and elders can ask questions to assess a nominee’s suitability for leadership.

This is an important time in the life of our church, and we invite you to participate in this process of discernment:

  • Date: Thursday, 10 September
  • Time: 3:30-4:30pm
  • Location: The meeting room, Benoni Baptist Church, 33 Wordsworth Road, Farrarmere, Benoni

The hour will be structured to allow for transparency and thorough examination:

  • Elders (15 mins): The elders will ask Gerhard questions regarding his doctrine, character, and calling. What he believes, how he behaves, God’s leading in his life and ministry. This will be an open time, and members are welcome to view the proceedings.
  • Members (15 mins): The congregation may ask Gerhard questions regarding his doctrine, character, and calling. If you are unable to attend but have a question, please submit it in advance via email to: elders@benonibaptistchurch.com.
  • Elders and invited pastors (30 mins): The elders, together with invited pastors from the Baptist Northern Association (our regional network of partner churches), will have a closed session with Gerhard. This closed session allows for deeper, personal assessment between the candidate and experienced ministers.

The election for Gerhard Wessels will take place at the annual general meeting on Sunday, 22 September, immediately following the morning service.

We encourage all members to pray for Gerhard, and the elders as we seek the Lord’s will for our church leadership.
