We live in a world filled with competing voices. Every day, our phones, workplaces, social media feeds, and conversations tell us what to believe and how to live. Yet the Christian does not need to be confused about where truth is found. Paul says that an elder must be “holding to the faithful message as taught.” Mark says, “Good ministers cling to Christ. Cling to the gospel. Cling to the apostles’ teaching. Cling to Scripture.” Faithful leaders hold tightly to God’s Word because God’s Word tells us what is true.
That means faithful ministry is not about giving people whatever advice they want to hear. It is not about entertaining a congregation or impressing people with clever ideas. Mark says, “You don’t come to church to hear me give my top life tips.” We come to hear God’s Word because our souls need truth. Paul says an elder must be able “both to encourage with sound teaching and to refute those who contradict it.” God’s Word strengthens us, corrects us, and protects us from error.
This also means that every Christian needs to develop a deep attachment to Scripture. We cannot expect to stand firm against competing voices if we rarely open God’s Word. Mark says, “your soul longs to hear Truth that feeds your soul. Builds you up. Strengthens your inner man.” Your schedule may be full. Work may be demanding. Family responsibilities may leave little time. But even a few focused minutes in Scripture can reorient your heart. Today, read a short passage slowly. Ask what it teaches you about God. Ask what it exposes in you. Then ask what obedience should look like.
This is especially important for fathers. Your children are growing up surrounded by voices that will compete for their hearts and minds. They need to see that God’s Word carries greater authority than the opinions of the world. Read Titus 1:9 with them today. Explain that Scripture is not merely something Christians know. It is something we cling to. Mark says, “Good ministers cling to Christ. Cling to the gospel.” Help your children learn to do the same.
Gospel character and gospel conviction belong together. The man who teaches God’s Word must also live under its authority. Mark says, “Not just hold correct doctrine, but patiently instruct the congregation with wholesome words.” That challenge applies to all of us. We need truth that shapes both what we believe and how we live. What competing voices are trying to shape your convictions today, and how can you make God’s Word the louder voice?
Lord, help me cling to Your Word. Guard my heart from falsehood, shape my convictions by Your truth, and give me grace to obey what You teach. Amen.
