Your life is preaching something every day. Mark Penrith reminds us, “The leader must model what he commands.” Titus 2:7 says, “In everything make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching.” Titus was not simply called to teach the truth. His life needed to support the truth he taught. People were listening to his words, but they were also watching his life.
This applies to every Christian, especially those who lead at home. Our families see what happens when we are tired, frustrated, disappointed, or under pressure. They see how we speak to our wives. They see how we respond to our children. They see what we do when nobody else is watching. Mark says, “The world is watching. Our lives are not private. Our conduct is not inconsequential.” Our Christianity cannot become something we display on Sunday and put away on Monday.
That makes the question personal. Where have your public Christianity and private life become disconnected? Perhaps you speak about patience but regularly lose your temper. Perhaps you teach integrity but cut corners at work. Perhaps you tell your children to control their attitudes while they regularly watch you grumble and complain. Mark asks, “Does your life in your home adorn the gospel or disgrace it?” Titus was told, “Your message is to be sound beyond reproach.” The same truth should shape the messenger as well as the message.
Your children will learn from what they repeatedly see. Ask yourself, if your children copied your attitude, habits, words, and priorities, what kind of Christians would they become? That question should not crush us. It should move us toward repentance. Mark says, “Grace isn’t idle. Grace isn’t passive. Grace works. Grace shapes. Grace forms. Grace produces godliness in the most ordinary places of our lives.” So identify one inconsistency today. Confess it to God. Then take one concrete step toward change. Let your life match your message.
Father, make my life consistent with what I profess. Expose the areas where I need to repent. Help me model godliness for my family and make my life a faithful witness to the gospel. Amen.
